Ilit Azoulay Regarding Silences

CCA Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv

February 21 – April 18, 2019

Curated by Chen Tamir

Ilit Azoulay has developed a signature photographic style befitting the complex task of representation in Israel/Palestine, a region characterized by entangled histories and competing narratives. Her images collage dozens, sometimes thousands, of close-ups into massive, spatially ambiguous compositions that might simultaneously show a wall, the picture hanging on it, the materials it is made of, and the view beyond it. This exhibition’s eight tableaux are the products of eight years of research into an extremely complex site: an iconic Brutalist building erected in the 1960s to serve as a convalescent home and then used as an interrogation camp before its recent conversion into a luxury hotel, where its millionaire patron’s art collection now hangs. Azoulay’s images set out an expanded archaeology of the building’s past through detailed scenes that evoke the rich stories held within its walls.
