Assaf Shaham’s work on the cover of Machiavelli’s “The Prince”

September 8, 2020

We are pleased to share that Assaf Shaham’s work Storyteller (The Soldier), 2012-2015, was selected for the cover of Penguin Random House’s latest edition of “The Prince” by Niccolo Machiavelli. The soft-cover book is part of the publishing houses’s Vintage Classics series, an essential collection of the world’s finest literature.

Shaham’s work is a homage to German photographer August Sander and his iconic book ‘People of the 20th Century’. A typological photographer, Sander often cataloged his photographed subjects by profession. As an antidote to his typological photography and to the notion of photography as a form of categorization, and by means of intentionally sabotaging Sander’s famed corpus, Shaham chose to cut through several pages of reproductions, chirurgically extracting one figure after another, he left them empty, hollowed-out of any previous characteristics or individual traits. These vacuous silhouettes were superimposed like the pages of a book, their cavities joined together to form a new, unified identity.
