Elena Ceretti Stein “Habitus”: new solo exhibition at P8 Contemporary Art Gallery

June 3 – July 3, 2021

“Habitus” is the new solo exhibition by Elena Ceretti Stein (b. 1989; lives and works in Milan and Tel Aviv) opening on Thursday, June 3 at 8PM at P8 Contemporary Art Gallery.

A Gallery Talk will be held on Friday, July 2 at 12 PM.

The solo show is curated by Hadassa Cohen.

In sociology, Habitus is described by Pierre Bourdieu as a collection of tendencies, habits, or skills that can be transferred from one social field to another, usually through imitation (Mimesis). In this exhibition, P8 Gallery space is transformed into a chapel-like structure: on its walls, traditional Italian frescoes, peeling and revealing what’s underneath, and at its center a flourishing island embedded with hints of the presence of a domesticated animal. Elena Ceretti Stein deals with disassembly, disruption, and foreignness, weaving together habitats — one that she borrows from nature and one that contains reminiscences of human culture. Under one dome, she unites the living and the inanimate, the holy and the secular, and examines humans’ positioning in the world and power relations that activate them.

Exhibition dates: June 3 – July 3, 2021
