Maya Schindler’s letter installations literally mutate recognizable, even cliched terms and statements. Warping Aretha Flanklin’s ‘r-es-p-e-c-t’ into a somewhat askew fence-like object, and Dorothy’s avowal that there is ‘no place like home’ into a glossy, crisply-edged wall-piece, Schindler employs textuality in ways that reflect on semiotics, childhood imagery, popular culture, and art historical reference as nothing more than blind alleys.
