Braverman Gallery presents “SERIOUSLY” featuring works by Maya Schindler.
Schindler is an Israeli artist, currently based in Los Angeles, California. She received her B.F.A. from the Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem and earned her M.F.A. from the Yale University School of Art. She recently finished her Artist in Residence tenure at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
In the past year Schindler has exhibited in New York (Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery, Southfirst Gallery), Los Angeles (Gallery Q.E.D), Dallas (Angstrom Gallery, The Dallas Contemporary), Houston (Devin Borden, Hiram Butler Gallery, Inman Gallery) and others.
SERIOUSLY is solo show of work by Maya Schindler. It features an installation of both painting and sculpture work. On the lower level of the gallery, she will exhibit a large scale edition of prints that was created at the Jerusalem Print shop.
In the gallery windows Schindler will exhibit a large text installation made from Formica and PVC. The text invites reading from both left-to-right and right-to-left directions allowing a dialog between form meaning and aesthetics.
As a conceptual artist today, Schindler is interested in interpreting the objective world in a subjective manner. She is doing so by selecting images, and then editing and cropping them. The presentation itself is a multi-layered painting installation of different images. They are being brought together as an observation, or one might say, interpretation. By choosing an image of a clown, and presenting it next to an image of a hyena, and then next to a painting of a tree roots, the idea of self reflection comes to mind as well. Schindler attempts to reveal more than one meaning or an image by combing different images together as an installation.
