We had an online talk with Damien H.Ding’s, Noam Segal and Gregory Volk, as part of Ding’s solo exhibition Selfish Paintings at the gallery.

Damien H. Ding (born 1992) holds a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from Swarthmore College and is currently graduating from his Masters Degree at Virginia Commonwealth University’s painting department. Ding has presented a solo exhibition at List gallery in Swarthmore, PA, and in group exhibitions at Z/H Projects, Brooklyn, New York and Fox  Garden, Richmond, VA. His work is currently part of the online group show Within Global Isolation: Asian Artists in America, curated by Han Hongzheng and Chandler Allen. He is adjunct faculty in the painting department at VCU of Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.

Gregory Volk is a New York-based art writer, freelance curator, and a former associate professor at Virginia Commonwealth University. He writes regularly for Hyperallergic and Art in America, where is also contributing editor, and his articles and reviews have also appeared in many other publications. His book-length essay on German artist Katharina Grosse appears in the monograph Katharina Grosse, recently published by Lund Humphries as part of their Contemporary Painters Series. Among his contributions to exhibition catalogues and books are essays on Joan Jonas (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, 2007); Vito Acconci, in Vito Acconci: Diary of a Body, 1969-1973 (Charta, 2007); Turkish artist Ayse Erkmen (Venice Biennale, 2011), and Icelandic artist Ragna Róbertsdóttir, in Ragna Róbertsdóttir Works 1984-2017 (Distanz Verlag, Berlin, 2018).

Gregory Volk received his B.A. from Colgate University and his M.A. from Columbia University.  From 2004 – 2020 he was associate professor at VCU, teaching in both the Department of Sculpture + Extended Media and the Department of Painting + Printmaking.

Noam Segal is based in Brooklyn, New York, and was raised in Israel. She is an independent curator and writer who received her Ph.D. She’s presented the work of artists such as Neïl Beloufa, Pope.L, Sharon Hayes, Anri Sala, Ulla Von Brandenburg and Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz at prestigious international biennials and institutions, including the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) MOCO (Montepellier, France), Performa (NYC), Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago and Tel Aviv Museum of Art, among others.Segal is a visiting scholar in the department of performance studies at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and and  was a visiting faculty member of the MFA program in the department of painting and printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University.
