Romy Achituv will be speaking on the nature of photography in the context of the upcoming
Workshop on Regret, Emotions and Decision Making – 23rd and 24th of March, 2009
The workshop will take place at the Center for the Study of Rationality (Monday, March 23) and at Ben-Gurion University (Tuesday, March 24).
From Romy’s introduction:
“The recent war in Gaza has prompted me to revisit two sets of images photographed years ago: The first was shot in 1981 during my reserve duty in the Jibalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, and the second set, which was shot in 1995, documents homelessness in the subways of New York City. Considering these two sets together underscores particular characteristics of the photographic act. In particular, these images highlight the potentially invasive nature of photography and the delicate relationship of power inherent in such documentation. In returning to reflect upon these images, what also becomes apparent is the ease with which these relationships are violated.”
