Braverman Gallery is pleased to announce representation of acclaimed artist Ari Benjamin Meyers.
Meyers is renowned for a body of work that explores structures and processes that redefine the performative, social, and ephemeral nature of music. His oeuvre is distinguished by his conceptual projects and installations that often draw attention to concrete details of music-making otherwise taken for granted and make tangible underlying conceptual operations. Recent works have addressed music scores themselves, forms and arrangements of musical instruments and ensembles, concert settings, and gestures of performers and conductors. His compositions and performances seek to challenge the relationship between performer and audience, giving form to the practice of musicians and composers, and musical structures in the context of visual art.
Trained as a composer and conductor at The Juilliard School, Yale University, and The Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, Ari Benjamin Meyers became more widely known in the context of the visual and performative arts in 2007 as musical director and conductor of the group exhibition Il Tempo del Postino, (Manchester International Festival, 2007 and Art Basel, 2009). Meyers is scheduled to present his first solo exhibition at Braverman Gallery later this year.
Meyers’s first institutional solo exhibition in Italy, In Concert, fills the space of OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni from March 1 to April 14, 2019 with something that goes beyond music: a variety of social interactions and experiences.
Ari Benjamin Meyers In Concert carries the visitor past the limits and boundaries of classical western music, overcoming the distance between performers and listeners, here no longer understood as active senders and passive recipients. Meyers aims to create “a real relationship among the audience and performers and with the music.”In Concert brings us back to the Latin roots of the term concert – meaning playing or singing together, without originally implying any division between performer and listener. Meyers creates an immersive space for musical encounters, exchanges, and experiments, involving everyone present in the given moment.
Meyers will also present a new work, K Club (2019), specifically conceived for In Concert and designed in dialogue with OGR’s twofold mission of art and concert space. K Club reverses the experience of clubbing: instead of being part of a multitude, the visitor finds him or herself alone in the spacious, post-industrial concert hall, protagonist of an intimate pas de deux with the DJ.
