“The Syker Vorwerk – Center for Contemporary Art” took the festival year # 2021JLID – Jewish Life in Germany as an opportunity to initiate the interdisciplinary project “Auf ins KAFF כפר”, which moves at the interface of science, contemporary art and society and the results of which are an art exhibition with contemporary positions that are framed with accompanying events.
The exhibition shows six international positions of contemporary art that deal with history (s), landscapes and memory processes of the Jewish present and past. Several works were created for the exhibition that deal with the local history of the Jews who lived in Syke until the early 1940s. They were the last members of the small community, whose roots go back to 1728.
The title “Auf ins Kaff כפר” makes it clear that our everyday life and our language are still shaped by Jewish culture today. The word kaff has its origin in Hebrew and means village. The title is to be understood as a call to artists and visitors. An invitation to visit the supposed “dump” Syke and its surroundings and to get a new perspective and view of Jewish history and culture.
