With an international selection of 30 single-channel videos and installations from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and North America, Moving Image has been conceived to offer a viewing experience with the excitement and vitality of a fair, while allowing moving-image-based artworks to be understood and appreciated on their own terms.
Braverman Gallery is pleased to present Kate Gilmore “Built to Burst” at MOVING IMAGE NEW YORK 2012, the Contemporary Video Art Fair.
Gilmore’s piece “Built to Burst” – is a large scale installation, performance that was documented on video. This piece was designed for Braverman Gallery and was made
and shot on site. The video consists of five platforms that are designed based on the dimensions of the gallery and the shot of the camera. From above, the camera looks
down on the sculpture and the performance, filling the frame with the sculpture and the actions that occur. On the sculpture there is over 100 paint filled pots situated on the
platforms. Gilmore walk and crawl around the edges of the platform—spilling, breaking, and knocking over the pots causing the paint to spill. This action creates an abstract
“painting” on camera. Two colors are used (white and orange)—altering colors for each layer. This 3D installation is transformed into a 2D painting on camera. The artist uses
her body to destroy and transform the object into something new. From the destruction and aggressive acts emerges the beautiful. There is a tension between the typical
female role and the unexpected aggressive acts of Gilmore.
