Josephine Meckseper, b. 1964, Germany. Lives and works in New York.
Meckseper uses commercial forms of presentation such as vitrines, window displays, and magazines, to demonstrate inextricable influences of consumer culture on society. Meckseper melds the aesthetic language of modernism with the formal language of commercial display, combining them with images and artifacts of historical undercurrents and political protest movements. She approaches her art as a conceptual experiment by simultaneously exposing and encasing common signifiers, such as advertisements, political symbols, and everyday objects, she creates a window into the collective unconscious of our time.
She has held exhibitions at major international institutions, including the Whitney Museum of Fine Art in New York, NY; the Royal Academy in London, UK; the Museum fur Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, Switzerland; the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, Germany; and the Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, Germany. Meckseper has also taken part in numerous national and international group exhibitions including; P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, the Frankfurter Kunstverein, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and MoMA, New York. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, among others.
