Every Monkey is a Gazelle in His Mother's Eyes
Opening: Thursday, Nov 19th, 2009, 8pm
Nov. 19 – Dec. 24, 2009
extended until Dec 31, 2009
Braverman Gallery is pleased to invite you to David Adika‘s new solo show Every Monkey is a Gazelle in His Mother’s Eyes.
The exhibition presents a collection of new photographs that employ aesthetic values to address issues of culture and identity. The title of the exhibition is taken from an Arabic idiom for unconditional love. The relation between the “monkey” and the “gazelle” is used by Adika to explore physical extremes, extreme attitudes and cultural definitions. The photographs examine visual cliches and stereotypes that define the fraught affinity between forgery and love. This opposition, as well as dichotomies between East/West or Israeli/Arab are recurring themes in Adika’s work, who focuses on differences in taste and style so as to investigate myths of presence and absence in visual culture.
14 new works are exhibited. All but one were photographed as Adika wandered through the streets of Tel Aviv, Akko, Paris and Nazareth.
David Adika teaches at the Bezalel Academy of Art and at Shenkar, and holds an MFA from the Bezalel Academy (Tel Aviv) and a BFA in photography from Bezalel (Jerusalem). In the past decade he has exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Braverman Gallery, The Herzliya Museum of Art, The Haifa Museum of Art and The Israel Museum. He has participated in the Photography Biennale, Liege (Belgium) and in numerous galleries and other exhibition spaces nationally and internationally.
