Nezaket Ekici, group exhibition, ‘Uncertain States’ at Akademie der Künste, Berlin-Tiergarten

October 14, 2016

As part of a group exhibition Uncertain States at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin-Tiergarten, Nezaket Ekici will exhibit Tooth for Tooth – In memory of the murdered women in Turkey (2016). The installation, composed of 8-channel video installation (HD, colour, sound, 79 min.), depicts the ongoing violence against women in Turkey – and the widely-differing reactions to reports of women killed range from rage to resignation. The last report to trigger nationwide protests was the violent death of the student Özgecan Aslan in 2015. In this video performance, intended to remind people of serious crimes committed against women, women become advocates of representative individual stories, presented here as noisy, combative protests. This is not just about sexual assault cases, but predominantly murders, which the performers confront with their physical and verbal power. According to World Bank Data statistics, half of such crimes – defined as genderbased violence – are committed within families. The women portrayed are ultimately protesting against contemporary Turkish society – one still systematically downplays violence against women.

Uncertain States curated by Anke Hervol, Johannes Odenthal in cooperation with Katerina Gregos, Diana Wechsler.

October 15th through January 15th, 2017.
