January 29 - February 21, 2026
Braverman Gallery is pleased to invite the public to a solo exhibition by Jacob Mishori, one of the most distinctive and influential voices to have shaped the field of Israeli art over several decades.
The exhibition offers a renewed perspective on Mishori’s work and brings together works from different periods, including pieces that have not been exhibited for many years. This is a rare opportunity to engage with a coherent artistic trajectory that, in its time, was considered ahead of its moment and groundbreaking. At a time when minimalist practices and the ethos of “Want of Matter” dominated the Israeli art scene, Mishori chose to introduce color, expressiveness, and figuration into the local artistic discourse, establishing a singular position within the Israeli canon.
Mishori’s practice moves between sustained painterly research and a critical reflection on the conditions under which art itself operates. His paintings are characterized by a constant tension between control and freedom, and by an ongoing examination of the act of painting as a material, conceptual, and political gesture. Alongside his artistic practice, Mishori wrote extensively and taught at all of Israel’s major art institutions, engaging directly with questions concerning the status of art education, the formation of discourse, and the educational significance of studying art. This position shaped an independent and uncompromising artistic language and educated generations of artists who continue his legacy.
The exhibition does not seek to present a linear narrative, but rather to allow for a transversal reading of Mishori’s works. From a contemporary perspective, the enduring relevance of an artistic practice developed over many years comes into view. Questions concerning freedom of expression, control, and power remain as urgent and resonant today as ever.
