Ishmael

Following its premier at Art Basel Features, Braverman Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of ISHMAEL, a new video installation by Nira Pereg. Following Abraham Abraham Sarah Sarah (2012), Ishmael continues Pereg’s ongoing investigation of the everyday routines at the Cave of the Patriarch.  Pereg returned to Hebron, where she spent one whole day following the adhan, the five Muezzin calls for prayer from 4am to 9pm, documenting the singularity of the way in which the ritual is conducted in the Cave of the Patriarch at this time.

Echoing the cooperation between Israeli Defense Forces, the Border Patrol Police and Hebron’s Police Force, Pereg placed three cameras – one inside the mosque, one at the door/threshold between the mosque and the synagogue, and one inside the synagogue. She articulated a narrative and meticulously edited it into a multi-channel video installation. The work emphasizes the performative qualities of the routine activities in the Cave that touch upon the link between ceremony and territory, bringing forth a reality that is far from the general public’s awareness, revealing the complex way in which systems pertaining to religious belief, social norms and politics intertwine.

Pereg’s work examines different types of public spaces, such as vertical burial sites, documentation of roadblocks in Jewish Orthodox neighborhoods during the Sabbath, or the upkeep of sacred graves. Pereg attends to different aspects of the regular maintenance occurring in these places, pausing on what she calls spiritual bureaucracy. Her works reveal the form through which religion marks concrete territories in order to maintain itself. Pereg’s subjects relate to the power relations and cooperative arrangements in place that serve to strengthen the religious narrative in each site, thus raising questions about the metaphysical and physical tie created in these types of ritualistic unions. 

In parallel to the exhibition at the gallery, Pereg’s solo show The Right to Clean is currently on view at the Israel Museum’s Ticho House in Jerusalem (until 12.1.2016), and at the Rose Museum in Boston, as part of  a collaboration with the Israel Museum. Pereg is also participating in the 2015 Moscow Biennial, and the group exhibition Rainbow in the Dark at Malmö Stad in Sweden (curated by Galit Eilat and Sebastian Cichocki, until 17.1. 2016).

Nira Pereg (b. 1969), holds a BA from Cooper Union New York (1993) and an MFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem (2000), and teaches in art institutions in Israel and abroad. נירה פרג | יִשְׁמָעֵאל | פתיחה: 8 באוקטובר  8.10.2015-10.12.2015 | אוצרת: עדי גורה

גלריה ברוורמן מתכבדת להזמין לפתיחת תערוכת היחיד יִשְׁמָעֵאל של האמנית נירה פרג, הכוללת מיצב וידאו של ארבעהערוצים. יִשְׁמָעֵאל מעמיקה את חקירתה המתמשכת של פרג את המתרחש במערת המכפלה. קדמו לה עבודות הווידאו: אברהם אברהם ו–שרה שרה (2012). ביִשְׁמָעֵאל חוזרת נירה לחברון בפעם שניה, ועוקבת במשך יום אחד אחר חמשתכריזות המואזין לתפילה (האד’אן), מ-4 בבוקר עד 9 בערב ומתעדת את האופן הסינגולרי שבו הן מתנהלות במערת המכפלהבתקופה זו.

על ידי הצבתן של שלוש מצלמות– האחת במסגד, השנייה בדלת/גבול המעבר והשלישית בבית–הכנסת, מנסחת פרג נרטיבאותו היא עורכת בקפדנות מחושבת אל תוך מיצב רב–ערוצי. העבודה מדגישה את האיכויות הפרפורמטיביות של פעילותשגרתית במערה הנוגעות בקשר שבין טקסיות וטריטוריה המתהדקים כתוצאה מסוג של שיתוף פעולה הדוק בין צבא ישראל, משטרת הגבול ומשטרת חברון לבין המאמינים המאכלסים את המרחב הטעון הזה. בעבודותיה מציפה פרג מציאות שאינהבמודעות הציבור הרחב  ומתייחסת אל האופן המורכב שבו מערכות הנוגעות לאמונה, נורמות חברתיות ופוליטיקה נשזרותהאחת בשנייה.

נירה פרג, ילידת הארץ (1969), בעלת תואר ראשון (The Cooper Union, New-York, NY,1993) ושני (תוכנית התואר השניבאמנויות, בצלאל, ירושלים, 2000) ומלמדת במוסדות אקדמאיים בארץ ובחו”ל. בעבודותיה אפשר לראות טריטוריות שונותבמרחב הציבורי הקשורות לחיי כולנו. בניית רבי קומות לקבורה, תיעוד של מחסומים כנגד כלי–רכב בשכונות חרדיות בשבתאו תחזוקת קברים קדושים. פרג בוחנת היבטים שונים בפרקטיקות יומיומיות המתרחשות במרחבים אלו. היא מתעכבת עלמה שהיא קוראת בירוקרטיית הרוח ומציפה את הצורה בה דת מסמנת טרטוריה מוחשית על מנת לקיים את אמנותה. מושאיהמחקר של פרג מתייחסים ליחסי הכוחות והסדרי הפעולה שמתקיימים על מנת לחזק את הנרטיב הדתי בכל אתר ומעלהשאלות על אודות הקשר המטא–פיזי והפיזי הנוצר בעקבות ההאחדה הריטואלית.

במקביל לתערוכה בגלריה, תערוכת היחיד של פרג ״הזכות לנקות״ מתקיימת בימים אלו (10.9-12.1.16) בבית אנה טיכומוזיאון ישראל (אוצרת: תמנה זליגמן), ובמוזיאון הרוז בבוסטון ארה״ב כפרויקט משותף עם מוזיאון ישראל. כמו כן משתתפתפרג בביאנלה של מוסקבה 2015 ובתערוכה Rainbow in the Dark On the Joy and Torment of Faith   (17.10.15-17.01.16) במוזיאון מלמו בשוודיה (אוצרים: גלית אילת וסבסטיאן ציקוצי).
