Floating Inside Out
Naomi Ben Shahar, Floating Inside Out (WTC), 2003, One-channel video, 15:08 min
In the years 2000-2003 Ms. Naomi Ben-Shahar created a four-part video series which was shot in several places around the world: the World Trade Center in New York, a nightclub in Tel Aviv, an art center in Oldenburg, Germany, and a New York loft in Chelsea.
The works document dance parties in which Ben-Shahar attempted to examine physical and psychological interactions between individuals, and to map the inter-personal dynamics that can be woven in social spaces.
Floating Inside Out (WTC) was shot in Ben-Shahar´s studio, which was located on the 92nd floor of the Twin Towers, on Sept. 4th, 2001- a week before their tragic fall.
Video cameras were placed above and amongst the guests, and a tiny, lit, light bulb was attached to each participant´s head. The tiny lights enabled the cameras to follow the relationships, the events, and the social situations that occurred between people in the space. The sound and movement represented the energy that flowed in the studio.
Night views of New York City, as reflected through the big studio windows, flickered in the background and became a meaningful aspect in the party and in the work. The resulting images seem like a fireflies´ surreal dance, hovering in the dark above the night-lit city skyline.
