Face Off

Roy Efrat, Diego Singh, Naama Hofman, Dana Nechmad, Keren Ella Gefen

September 12 - October 24, 2013

This exhibition brings together a group of young artists – most of them recently graduated from different art schools, locally and abroad – that question the media of painting. The works in the show display the artists’ shared interest in the materiality and the process of painting. The creative process of these works is considered to be relatively slow and intricate, perhaps as a reaction to the abundance of visual information in today’s world. Diego Singh’s works take about a decade to complete. By employing fluorescent pigment, Singh’s painting takes a blue-jeans look to it. He refers to Rothko’s paintings, but strives to question anew the transcendent nature of painting. Keren Ella Gefen is interested in the boundaries of the painting and what occurs once a painting crosses the two-dimension plane into a three-dimensional one. Dana Nechmad deals with the image and how it is represented within the pictorial field once it is charged with a new meaning, almost opposite to the object’s original use. Naama Hofman creates light objects that relate to the grid used in painting. Downstairs, Roy Efrat questions the medium of art by creating a large-scale work, combining both painting and video-art.
