Air Pockets

Braverman Gallery is proud to present a new exhibition by Etty Abergel –Air Pockets, including new installations and drawing from last year.

Abergel’s new exhibition marks an organic transition in the artist work, from concrete autobiographic installations, which has been her practice for the last past decade, to the artistic representation of rephrasing sculptural space and its conversion from tridimensional to two dimensional.

A group of drawings stand in the center of the exhibition, simulating Air pockets, indicating mental situations, sort of imaginary poetical traps in which abstract plots and transformation processes occur.

The drawings are made in a rich mixed media technique (pencils, markers, ink, water color, pens, oil, acrylic, gesso, etc.) functioning as potential diagrams of sculptural situations; material constructions, based on modular units presenting images taken from organic worlds (shells), natural phenomenon (whirlpool, whirlwind ), cosmic sets (stars, galaxies) and cultural holistic perceptions (mandala, spiritual maps).

The drawings composition are visually related through hidden elements found in the drawings (such as a round hole motive, like an eye, a sort of glancing to the abandoned infinitive and symbolize the option of life beyond art). Those are separate compositions that consolidate to endless automatic and constructivist images, which create a system of tension and valance from the center of the world to the anstract.

These new drawing series expose Abergel’s desire to delineate her impulse for infinity, characteristic of installations, in to the limits of the paper sheet. An attempt to reduction can be seen, creating tension between material and illusion.

In the gallery display windows, two installations, relating to the drawing images will be presented.

The central display window of the gallery will present big tridimensional plaster bodies integrating pieces of daily objects, resembling rocks growing out of the floor with ink tubes going out of them.

The left window gallery will display a metaphoric trampoline, looking like a dream catcher like object, made of hundreds of tangled and woven blue transparent plastic pens, becoming an imaginary jumping board in to the gallery’s space.

Abergel’s tridimensional installations complement and balance the flying sensation created by the drawings.

Her exhibition constitutes a kind of an automatic journey towards an imaginary and sensitive space, in which, constant tension between the multiple dimensional of the installation versus the “formational” of the drawing work can be seen.
