Assaf Hinden: Preface

Assaf Hinden’s solo exhibition “Preface” combines site-specific interventions with selected works from recent projects that have been re-edited in response to the exhibition space, which serves as the lobby of a residential building.

The exhibition is divided into two main parts; The first includes two series of photography and image-based works that explore the origin, meanings, and interpretations of selected objects and artifacts. One of these series, titled “Parallel Catalogue,” features framed double-spreads from a 1937 auction catalog of looted art, with additional imagery, manipulations, and information added by Hinden. The second series explores foreign objects, recorded in ways that emphasize their violent, romantic, or banal characteristics through visual interferences.

The other part of the show examines foyer spaces, transitional areas welcoming people entering a building or institution, where one only passes without leaving material evidence. Hinden reveals and reproduces elements of The Lobby Art Space while exploring the boundaries between representation and source, as well as the interplay between hidden, erased, and visible elements.
