Tilted Walls

Tigist Yoseph Ron’s first exhibition at the gallery, Tilted Walls, displays a series of charcoal drawings representing different human figures portrayed in domestic environments. In the exhibition, Yoseph Ron touches upon issues of identity, memory and belonging.
Delicate strokes capture household moments and people that are familiar to Yoseph Ron’s past and present, and are collected like images in a family album. Memories from her various homes, whether it be the mud house in Gondar in Ethiopia, the temporary housing in Atlit, her father’s apartment in Rishon Lezion, or apartments in Tel Aviv, become subtle impressions of the artist’s narrative.
The subject of home has become an essential part of our contemporaneity. The private family space no longer acts as a shelter but becomes a new landscape, a public space in which the social relationships of the contemporary world are reflected and experienced. This duality is echoed in Yoseph Ron’ work, in which the relation between indoor and outdoor spaces becomes a metaphor to reveal fragilities and emotions that lurk below the surface of each of us.
The title of the exhibition refers to the sloping walls of Tigist’s childhood home in Gondar, walls which find their way into all of her subsequent abodes, and it is linked to the feeling of instability of the house, when different memories mix and alter the sense of reality.
Tigist Yoseph Ron was born 1977 in Gondar, Ethiopia. She immigrated to Israel in 1984 and now lives and works in Ra’anana, Israel. Yoseph Ron is a graduate of the Visual Communications Department at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design In Jerusalem. Her latest exhibitions include The White Paper is Black Within, Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2020-2021); the group exhibition The Color Line, Sapir College Gallery, the Negev, Israel (2019); In Her Place, a joint exhibition with Mimi Tasama Sibaho, Jaffa Museum (2018) and a joint exhibition with Nirit Takele in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2018). In 2019 Tigist won the Haim Shiff Prize for Figurative-Realist Art.
