Shana Moulton’s work “Unique Boutique” deals with the ideals of beauty and success as they are reflected in the age of technology and under cyber culture. Moulton investigates the anxieties and fears of the contemporary era through the eyes of her alter-ego – Cynthia – and examines the way in which commodities have evolved into something almost spiritual, with the power to calm and quiet any discomfort. By employing low-tech technology, humor and dream-like, psychedelic and surreal situations, Moulton’s video works express the individual’s need for a community, a sense of belonging and of self-empowerment.
Moulton earned her BA from University of California, Berkeley in Art and Anthropology (1999) and her MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2004). She has studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2004) and at De Atelier, Amsterdam (2004-2006). Moulton has had solo exhibitions or performances at The New Museum (2011), SFMOMA (2012), MoMA P.S.1, and her video-works were shown at Art in General (NY), The Migros Museum (Zurich), Uppsala Art Museum (Sweden), Rencontres Internationales (Paris/Berlin), Aurora (Edinburgh), Performa 2009 (NY), Sculpture Park (NY) and many more.
