Performa’s Chief Curator RoseLee Goldberg discusses the commissioning process and will feature highlights from South African Artist Robin Rhode’s Performa 15 Commission, ‘Arnold Schönberg’s Erwartung,” presented in Time Square, and which has recently been released on film. Shot with several cameras from numerous vantage points in Times Square where the performance took place, Rhode’s film captures the solo singer and assembled twenty-member orchestra performing at the heart of New York’s most dramatic public crossroads. Composed in 1909, Erwartung tells the melancholy story of love, longing and loss. In Rhode’s hands, the one-act opera is transformed to reflect the experiences of South African women who were separated interminably from their husbands by the migrant labor system of apartheid.

Robin Rhode’s Performa 15 Commission was co-presented with VIA Art Fund and Times Square Arts. With support from Renee and Robin Drake. Special thanks to Lehmann Maupin Gallery.
